Alexander Hamilton, as seen on the US Ten dollar bill, was the first Treasury Secretary and a key author of American economic policy as well as the federalist papers. His principles advocated a system of tariffs and taxes that supported the growth and economic freedom of the People of the United States, as opposed to the British rules-based system called "Free Trade."

We did not defeat the British Empire in the Revolutionary War, we repelled it from America.  US Naval and Merchant ships were still harassed by the Brits, leading to the War of 1812 and burning of the White House. 

So while it seems we defeated King George and the English military, the British Empire where "the sun never set," ruled over 60 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean.  Post WW2, the empire still controls Canada, Australia, South Africa and more, but their influence has evolved into sponsored global conflicts, protection rackets (Lloyds of London) as well as think-tanks and non-governmental organizations that channel global commerce and conflicts.

The Trump administration has taken actions to abandon the global world order that includes NATO, the UN, WEF, IMF, WHO and many more.  American policy is shifting from allegiance to the world bankers to alliances with western hemisphere neighbors and destruction of the cartels that fund them.
